The moral case for recognizing Jewish sovereignty on the Golan Heights

By Noam A. Rotem

A snowy Mount Hermon as seen from the summit of Mount Bental in the Golan Heights. (Wikimedia Commons)

Psalm 133 opens with the iconic lyrics:
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.
The verse was popularized into one of the most famous Jewish folks song of the 20th century. That same psalm ends with a reference to Mt. Hermon (at the tip of the Golan Heights):
like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.
The name Golan appears for the first time in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy: “And the Golan in Bashan for (the tribe of) Menashe.” “Golan” in this verse refers to a name of a city, in the Bashan region, which was the ancient and biblical name for the Golan Heights region.

The Hasmonean King Alexander Jannaeus conquered the Golan in the first century BCE, and settled the city of Gamla. During that time, many Jewish settlements were established in the Golan. The remains of one of the earliest synagogues is situated inside the city walls of Gamla. The synagogue is thought to date from the late first century BCE, and is considered among the oldest synagogues in the world.

During the Great Jewish Revolt against the Romans, 66–73 CE, a major battle is described in detail by Josephus, between the Romans and the Jews of Gamla, whereupon the city was captured and destroyed by the Romans.

In the days of the Mishna and the Talmud, many Jewish settlements existed in the Golan as evidenced by sources of both Hazal (the Jewish sages of the Mishna and Talmud eras), and backed by archaeological findings.

But from the beginning of Ottoman rule until the middle of the 19th century, the Golan turned into mostly a desolate frontier region, with few permanent residents, and ruled by Bedouin tribes. Druze settlements were established in the northern Golan Heights, and exist there to this day.

At the end of the 19th century, several attempts were made by Jews to resettle in the Golan, including on lands purchased by the Baron Rothschild, as well as in several other locations, along the western slopes of the Golan overlooking the sea of Galilee.

At the height of World War I, a secret pact known as the Sykes-Picot agreement was reached between the British and French governments. The pact carved up the floundering Ottoman Empire into spheres of British and French influence. Borders were drawn on a map, in disregard of any historic, tribal, or ethnic considerations. In its wake, states like Syria and Iraq were created, without any nation-state coherency, setting the ground for the bloody rife and turmoil that has been going on in the region for over a century.

In 1946, Syria gained independence from France and with it control of the Golan Heights. Between 1949 and 1967, the Syrian army used the strategic Heights to shell Israeli civilian settlements along the border. There were many incidents of shooting at fishing boats on the Kinneret. As a result of these shelling, 140 civilians were killed and many more injured. Property was also damaged, and many fields of grain were burned. In the early 1950s, the Syrians did a land grab, and took control of Israel’s territory west of the international border, along the eastern shores of Lake Kinneret.

At the start of the Six Day War, the Syrians shelled the Hula Valley and Rosh Pina settlements, and Syrian tanks tried to advance towards the agricultural settlement of Kibbutz Dan. In the very last days of the war, following pressure from Jewish settlements in northern Israel, the Israeli government decided to conquer the Golan Heights and put an end to the threat of Syrian shelling on the Hula Valley communities.

Following several military coups in Syria, Hafez al-Assad came to power in 1970. In 1973, Assad launched a surprise attack against Israel, on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, in an attempt to capture back the Golan Heights. Some of the bravest battles in the annals of modern Israeli military history took place in defending the Golan, and the IDF turned that perilous and near fatal attack into a gallant victory.

In 1982, Assad conducted an infamous massacre in Hama Syria, which left 20,000 Syrian civilians dead, in response to a local uprising against his regime. At the time, it was considered one of the deadliest acts by any Arab government against its own people in the modern Middle East.

His son Bashar al-Assad would outdo him. Following an uprising against his regime in 2011, Bashar ruthlessly bombarded civilian populations en masse. His war crimes included the use of chemical weapons against his own civilian population, and his army conducted widespread ethnic cleansing. Syria spiraled into one of the bloodiest civil wars in modern history, with the overall death toll estimated at 500,000, and with an estimated 7 million internally displaced and 5 million refugees.

Given the long history that Jews have in the Golan Heights, going back 2 and 3 millennia, coupled with the belligerent, brutal and immoral Syrian regimes, Presidents Trump’s decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty on the Golan Heights is a just one, both historically and morally.

David Cameron is No Friend of The Truth

True friends don't pander to mendacious lies against their friends

By Noam A. Rotem

Last week, in what became a widely discussed incident here in Israel, British Prime Minister David Cameron, in a discussion at the British Parliament, called Israeli construction in East Jerusalem “genuinely shocking”,  while insisting at the same time, that he is a “great friend of Israel”. What's genuinely shocking, is David Cameron's historical ignorance, hypocrisy and utter lack of moral clarity.

From the Islamic theocracies of Iran and Saudi Arabia, through the Sunni-Shia blood baths in Iraq and Syria, to all the offshoots of the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and Muslim brotherhood across the entire length of North Africa, the Islamic Mideast is producing some of the most horrifying levels of rampant murderous violence and persecutions the world has seen in the 21st century.

In the 20th century, the Arab and Islamic mideast, was ethnically cleansed of its Jewish population, that lived across many parts of the region for more than 2,000 years. Now in the 21st century, religious persecution of the remaining ancient Christian communities, along with other ancient minorities, are being brutally persecuted and ethnically cleansed, across many parts of the Islamic Mideast and Africa.

Israel is the only western liberal democratic country in the entire mideast, where minorities of all faiths, including Arab Muslims, enjoy democratic freedoms, unprecedented and unheard of anywhere in the entire region, and where Christians in particular are prospering and growing.

Under the Muslim Ottoman occupation, Jerusalem descended into a backwater forsaken city of little interest to the Arab and Muslim world. And under the Jordanian occupation of east Jerusalem in 1948, the Jewish Quarter in the Old City was destroyed, and its residents expelled.  Over 50 synagogues, some of them hundreds of years old, were destroyed and looted. Jewish religious sites were desecrated and turned into animal stalls. The Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives, where Jews had been burying their dead for over 2500 years, was ransacked, and thousands of tombstones were smashed and used as building material.

Contrarily, since 1967, when Jerusalem was liberated by Israel from Arab Muslim rule, there's been full freedom of religious practice for all faiths, and the holy sites of all religions are treated with utmost sanctity. Moreover, under Israeli rule, many holy sites in Jerusalem of all religions have been restored, and renewed.

By pandering to the question of the British Muslim MP, David Cameron, unwittingly or not, has aligned himself, with those perpetrating a systematic campaign of mendacious lies designed to undermine the Jewish State and rob it, of its more than 3,000 year old history to the land of Israel. Ever since King David made Jerusalem the capital of Israel more than 3,000 years ago, the city has played a central role in Jewish culture, religion and existence. In all of history, Jerusalem was never the capital of any Arab country.

In this unprincipled stance, David Cameron is leading Great Britain down the slippery slope of depraved multicultural political correctness, to a place where historical facts no longer matter, and where moral clarity is a pejorative.

    https://www.facebook.com/ayelet.benshaul.shaked/posts/602896819828748

The Palestinians are committing a double war crime. They are shooting lethal rockets targeting innocent civilian populations, from within their own civilian population, and using them as human shields. They use civilian homes, schools, hospitals and mosques, for hiding and launching these rockets. Israel goes out of its way to warn civilians residing in houses of terrorist leaders, that the house is about to be hit, providing them time to save their lives, all this in order to minimize civilian casualties. On the other hand Hamas is on record for encouraging their own civilians, women and children to remain in those homes and/or congregate around them, deliberately and cynically using them as human shields.

The Hamas is directly responsible for the killing of its own people by using them as human shields. The question of how many Palestinians deaths therefore needs to be pointed directly to them, as they're completely responsible for those deaths. If they would not be shooting rockets at innocent civilians from within their own civilian populations, *no one* there would be getting killed right now. The Palestinians were given billions of dollars, that they could have used to build a prosperous and civil society. Instead, Hamas spent that money in turning Gaza into a terrorist state, publicly committed, to the destruction of the state of Israel.

Last but not least, the Palestinian civilian population voted in Hamas, in democratic elections, demonstrating their support for Hamas' radical doctrine. This is the same population, who cheered 9-11 and handed out candies on the streets that day, and on other days of major suicide bombings in Israel. They are indoctrinated with hatred towards Israel and the west and thus bear responsibility for the actions of this terrorist regime they elected, and the predicament this regime brought upon them.

Steve Forbes: Why Netanyahu, The Churchill Of Our Time, Must Speak Before Congress

The illustrious Steve Forbes writes a moving article in support of Netanyahu and Israel

Steve Forbes, proves himself to be a genuine friend of the Jewish nation. Following is a heartfelt paragraph, from an article he wrote that was published on his online Forbes magazine, on January 28, 2015.
"Given the size of the Jewish state, it has no room for error. A nuclear-armed Iran will put Israeli leaders in a dangerous, hair-trigger situation. Israel is a crucial US ally, strategically and morally. It is the only durable democracy in the Mideast. With only 8 million people, Israel has surpassed the European Union, with a population of over 400 million, in high technology, rivaling Silicon Valley. It was born from the ashes of the Holocaust. The destruction of Israel would mean, ultimately, the end of Western civilization; the moral rot that would permit such an event would be just about impossible to surmount."
Sadly you won't find this covered in Israeli mainstream media

HANUKKAH AT THE HEIGHT OF NAZISM: A powerful reminder in 2014 to why we're here and our connection to over 3,000 years of history

Poignant, evocative and touching image.

A powerful reminder of why we're here, our connection to over 3,000 years of history, and the tenacity of the Jewish people through out the ages to hold on to its culture and heritage in face of grave danger and in defiance to centuries of cruel persecutions.

Join The 100 Wheelchair Demonstration Against the NYC Metropolitan Opera

To all friends and acquaintances in and around NYC. Please try and find the time to stand up against this morally offensive glorification of terrorism, evil, and murder.

In addition, I implore all people of good conscience, to boycott the NYC Metropolitan Opera, until they publicly apologize for this reprehensible production, and fire Peter Gelb, who with this choice, demonstrates utter moral corruption, and should have no place in leading one of New York City's leading cultural venues.

Thank you, sincerely,  Noam A. Rotem, Tel Aviv, Israel

by Noam A. Rotem
We cannot address the future of my region without addressing its central conflict: the denial of Palestinian rights and statehood.
Jordan strongly opposes threats to Jerusalem's Arab Muslim and Christian identity. As Hashemite custodian of Jerusalem's Muslim and Christian Holy Sites, I will continue to oppose any violation of Al Aqsa Mosque's sanctity.

Israel's Sea Turtle Rescue Center

Here's a bit of positive news about Israel you won't find on your local news stations (outside of Israel), on the efforts of Israeli Biologist/Zoologists and environmentalists in attempting to save and bolster sea turtle populations in the Mediterranean Sea.

It's Sea Turtle nesting season here in Israel, where every morning staff and volunteers from the rescue center scout the beaches for newly laid eggs from the previous night to collect them into protected nesting areas.

Here's a clip about the wonderful work this center does in English:

Israel's Secret 18 Month Air Lift of Food and Medicine to Biafra 40 years ago

This past week, channel 2 news here in Israel unveiled this amazing story from 40 years ago.

While the world stood silent, 40 years ago Israeli pilots and air-crews conducted a secret air-lift of food and medicine to the besieged Biafran nation. For 18 months in face of great risk and peril of being shot down by Nigerian Migs under the cover of night they flew red-cross propeller cargo plains into Biafra to bring life saving supplies. Now 40 years later, the pilots and crew meet at a reunion to retell their story.

Pilar Rahola is a Spanish Politician from the Left, journalist and activist and is a passionate Defender of the United States & Israel

Source: http://portalofideas.blogspot.com/2009/01/pilar-rahola.html

Conclusion:

I am not Jewish. Ideologically I am left and by profession a journalist. Why am I not as anti Israeli as my colleagues? Because as a non-Jew I have the historical responsibility to fight against Jewish hatred and currently against the hatred for their historic homeland, Israel. To fight against anti-Semitism is not the duty of the Jews, it is the duty of the non-Jews.

As a journalist it is my duty to search for the truth beyond prejudice, lies and manipulations. The truth about Israel is not told. As a person from the left who loves progress, I am obligated to defend liberty, culture, civic education for children, coexistence and the laws that the Tablets of the Covenant made into universal principles. Principles that Islamic fundamentalism systematically destroys. That is to say that as a non-Jew, journalist and lefty I have a triple moral duty with Israel, because if Israel is destroyed, liberty, modernity and culture will be destroyed too.

The struggle of Israel, even if the world doesn’t want to accept it, is the struggle of the world.

The Disgrace and Hypocrisy of Obama's treatment of the Israeli PM

1 British and 1 Australian Newspaper make a poignant case on this matter.

Barack Obama’s humiliation of Israel is a disgrace by Nile Gardiner UK Telegraph writes:
"I very much doubt that even third world tyrants would be received in such a rude fashion by the president...The ritual humiliation of the Israelis is an absolute disgrace, and yet another example of how the Obama administration views its allies with indifference, contempt, and at times outright hostility. It is extraordinary how far the Obama team has gone out of its way to grovel to state sponsors of terrorism, such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Muammar Gaddafi, while kicking America’s friends in the teeth...
Israel is literally fighting for its survival on a daily basis against an array of vicious terrorist groups, from Hamas to Hizbollah, while facing a looming threat from a genocidal, nuclear-armed Iran. President Obama’s top priority in the Middle East should be preventing Iran from building a nuclear weapons programme. Instead he seems obsessed with kowtowing to America’s enemies by bashing Israel at almost every opportunity"
Nile Gardiner UK Telegraph, is a Washington-based foreign affairs analyst and political commentator. He appears frequently on American and British television and radio, including Fox News Channel, CNN, BBC, Sky News, and NPR.

Obama's anti-Israeli hysteria dangerous and destructive by Greg Sheridan, Foreign editor From The Australian writes:
"When Obama met the king of Saudi Arabia, a nation in which no one votes, women are subject to severe and demeaning restrictions and it is against the law to have a Christian church, Obama bowed in deep respect. When Obama ran into Venezuela's murderous despot, Hugo Chavez, at a summit, there was a friendly greeting observed by all...You might even conclude that Obama is trying to interfere in internal Israeli politics and bring down a government. This is something post-colonial, post-multicultural Obama would never do with Iran, but with Israel, the US's longstanding ally, it's fine."

Hamas is committing three war crimes

Alan Dershowitz poignantly stated the obvious in an op-ed he wrote today for the WSJ titled: Israel's Policy Is Perfectly 'Proportionate' Hamas are the real war criminals in this conflict

Until the world recognizes that Hamas is committing three war crimes -- targeting Israeli civilians, using Palestinian civilians as human shields, and seeking the destruction of a member state of the United Nations -- and that Israel is acting in self-defense and out of military necessity, the conflict will continue.

...
In a recent incident related to me by the former head of the Israeli air force, Israeli intelligence learned that a family's house in Gaza was being used to manufacture rockets. The Israeli military gave the residents 30 minutes to leave. Instead, the owner called Hamas, which sent mothers carrying babies to the house.

Hamas knew that Israel would never fire at a home with civilians in it. They also knew that if Israeli authorities did not learn there were civilians in the house and fired on it, Hamas would win a public relations victory by displaying the dead. Israel held its fire. The Hamas rockets that were protected by the human shields were then used against Israeli civilians.

These despicable tactics -- targeting Israeli civilians while hiding behind Palestinian civilians -- can only work against moral democracies that care deeply about minimizing civilian casualties. They never work against amoral nations such as Russia, whose military has few inhibitions against killing civilians among whom enemy combatants are hiding.
...

Israel's Policy Is Perfectly 'Proportionate' Hamas are the real war criminals in this conflict

Former Sudanese Slave and Prominent Human Rights Activist--Simon Deng, blasts Desmond Tutu and Stands up for Israel

Simon Deng a modern day hero, is a native of the Shiluk Kingdom in southern Sudan, an escaped jihad slave and a leading human rights activist. Simon Deng visited Israel last month and is a unique defender of Israel. In 2005 he gave a poignant and passionate speech at a conference in Geneva. Following is an excerpt from that speech:
My name is Simon Aban Deng. I am from Sudan. I am a Shiluk by tribe. I am a Christian by religion. I belong to a people who have been subjected to mass murder, slavery, systematic rape, religious persecution, enforced starvation, dislocation, exile. We are the victims of genocide, both physical and cultural. We have been targeted for annihilation as human beings and as members of a culture. These miseries did not fall upon us from the sky; we have been and remain the victims of the radical jihadist regime in Khartoum.

The scale of our losses has been enormous in the two genocides perpetrated by the Islamists - two, not one. Starting in 1955, the year before independence was granted by the British, up until 1973, 1.5 million Southern Sudanese Christians were slaughtered by the Arab/Muslim dominated government in Khartoum. From 1983 until just 3 months ago when a peace treaty was brokered by the United States, we Southern Sudanese lost 2 million more to what Khartoum calls a holy war against the infidels. Yes, I am an infidel according to their definition. I think many of you are as well. We black "infidels" in the South, Christians and other non-Muslims, refused to be ruled by Islam, and we refused to be Arabized.

Our only offense was our determination to remain faithful to our religion and to honor our African cultures. For these "crimes" The National Islamic Front regime has committed genocide against us. Not only has that genocide produced the largest body-count of murdered innocents since the Nazis and the work of Joseph Stalin's followers, but it has also produced the largest population of refugees anywhere on earth since the Second World War.

Editorial Comment: And I ask: where are you Ms. Christian Amanpour, in light of this account and your saliently distorted and blatantly disingenuous "God's Holy Warriors". (A more extensive rebuttal to Ms. Amanpour's insincere series will follow at some later time).

This past month Simon Deng wrote the following article, which seems to have been originally published on The David Project and then reproduced on several other Blogs-- The Jewish Advocate, Gay and Right and Aish. Following is the article in its entirety:

Disappearance of Bishop Tutu
By Simon Deng

Late last month, I went to hear Bishop Desmond Tutu speak at Boston’s Old South Church at a conference on “Israel Apartheid.” Tutu is a well respected man of God. He brought reconciliation between blacks and whites in South Africa. That he would lead a conference that damns the Jewish state is very disturbing to me.

The State of Israel is not an apartheid state. I know because I write this from Jerusalem where I have seen Arab mothers peacefully strolling with their families – even though I also drove on Israeli roads protected by walls and fences from Arab bullets and stones. I know Arabs go to Israeli schools, and get the best medical care in the world. I know they vote and have elected representatives to the Israeli Parliament. I see street signs in Arabic, an official language here. None of this was true for blacks under Apartheid in Tutu’s South Africa.

I also know countries that do deserve the apartheid label: My country, Sudan, is on the top of the list, but so are Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. What has happened to my people in Sudan is a thousand times worse than Apartheid in South Africa. And no matter how the Palestinians suffer, they suffer nothing compared to my people. Nothing. And most of the suffering is the fault of their leaders. Bishop Tutu, I see black Jews walking down the street here in Jerusalem. Black like us, free and proud.

Tutu said Israeli checkpoints are a nightmare. But checkpoints are there because Palestinians are sent into Israel to blow up and kill innocent women and children. Tutu wants checkpoints removed. Do you not have doors in your home, Bishop? Does that make your house an apartheid house? If someone, Heaven forbid, tried to enter with a bomb, we would want you to have security people “humiliating” your guests with searches, and we would not call you racist for doing so. We all go through checkpoints at every airport. Are the airlines being racist? No.

Yes, the Palestinians are inconvenienced at checkpoints. But why, Bishop Tutu, do you care more about that inconvenience than about Jewish lives?

Bishop, when you used to dance for Mandela’s freedom, we Africans – all over Africa – joined in. Our support was key in your freedom. But when children in Burundi and Kinshasa, all the way to Liberia and Sierra Leone, and in particular in Sudan, cried and called for rescue, you heard but chose to be silent.

Today, black children are enslaved in Sudan, the last place in the continent of Africa where humans are owned by other humans – I was part of the movement to stop slavery in Mauritania, which just now abolished the practice. But you were not with us, Bishop Tutu.

So where is Desmond Tutu when my people call out for freedom? Slaughter and genocide and slavery are lashing Africans right now. Where are you for Sudan, Bishop Tutu? You are busy attacking the Jewish state. Why?
